I use the story of my life journey from reluctant reader to author to encourage kids to dream big and follow their
dreams — making sure to give them ideas on how to get there. My interactive, humorous presentation includes a
PowerPoint slide show, storytelling and cartooning lesson, as well as a question-and-answer session.
Titles include:
Dial M for Mongoose (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
From Russia with Lunch (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
Snoring Beauty (Houghton Mifflin Harcourt)
Prince of Underwhere (HarperCollins)
Fat Cat of Underwhere (HarperCollins)
BRUCE GOES GREEN AT ROOSEVELT!
The second and third graders were bubbling with excitement as they filed into the auditorium. Many had biked or walked or scootered to school in honor of Earth Day.
They were especially excited at the end of the event when we tallied up the votes and announced which group would be receiving the donation:
World Wildlife Fund.
Deafening cheers went up.
When a TV reporter asked one girl why she'd voted for WWF, she said "because the tigers are disappearing and we need to do something about it. The donation will help."
That's why I did this event -- to get the kids engaged in protecting the planet. And judging from the kids at Roosevelt Elementary, this strategy seems to be having an effect.
